Global economic slowdown felt in mining towns

DENVER -- A severe pullback in spending for everything from houses in Connecticut to jewelry in Europe and steel in China has reached as far as the New Mexico mining town of Silver City.
Hundreds of miners in this Southwestern town of 10,000 were notified Wednesday they will soon be out of work as demand for copper and molybdenum -- two key materials used in automobile production -- has been crippled.
Silver City is a prime example of how the global economic troubles -- such as China's cut in steel production or the domestic auto and housing woes -- have hurt small towns across America.
"Copper truly gives a picture of the economy," Silver City Mayor James Marshall said. "When the price of copper is up, the economy is healthy. When the economy drops, copper follows."
When the economy slows, copper used for wire or pipes goes unused. The same goes for molybdenum, used to harden steel, and palladium, used in electronics components.
Bigger layoffs began in October: half the 80-member work force at the Kensington Mine near Juneau, Alaska; and 21 percent of the work force at Montana's Stillwater Mining Co., the only U.S. producer of palladium and platinum.
Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc., the world's largest publicly traded copper producer, began laying off workers last month at its molybdenum mine near Henderson, Colo., and at its copper mines in Arizona and New Mexico, including two near Silver City.
The company announced additional layoffs Wednesday as part of a plan to cut production estimates through 2010 and curb costs.
Freeport-McMoRan also cut its 2009 copper production forecast to 4.1 billion pounds from 4.3 billion pounds, and its 2010 forecast to 4.1 billion pounds from 4.6 billion pounds

ACMA Industries is contemplating a stockmarket flotation to fund an international drive for its new flooring product, designed to cut injuries caused by falls among the elderly.
After six years in development, at a cost of more than $1 million, the Upper Hutt manufacturer recently launched Kradal, a floor tile aimed mainly at rest homes.
While the polyurethane tile has a strong top surface to help withstand everyday contact, a rubbery foam underlay cushions the impact of falls.
Acma claims the tiles reduce the shock of falling by at least 65 per cent compared to wooden or concrete floors and by a quarter compared to carpet with underlay.
